Makar Sankranti is celebrated when the Sun enters Capricorn (Makara Rashi). From this day, the Sun enters Uttarayana (northward movement). In Hindu dharma, Uttarayana is considered an auspicious period.

Bhishma Pitamaha waited for Uttarayana and gave up his life during this period. As a harvest festival, it holds great significance for farmers. With the arrival of new crops, people express gratitude to the divine.
