What is Ekadashi?
Ekadashi is the 11th day of the lunar fortnight. Two Ekadashis occur every month - one in Shukla Paksha and one in Krishna Paksha. Ekadashi is a very important fasting day for Vishnu devotees. It is believed that fasting on this day removes sins and leads to salvation.
2026 Important Ekadashis
Vaikunta Ekadashi
Margashira Shukla Ekadashi - The most sacred Ekadashi. Believed that the gates of Vaikunta open on this day.
Nirjala Ekadashi
Jyeshta Shukla Ekadashi - Fasting without even water. Gives the merit of all Ekadashis.
Devshayani Ekadashi
Ashada Shukla Ekadashi - The day Lord Vishnu goes into cosmic sleep. Beginning of Chaturmas.
Prabodhini Ekadashi
Kartik Shukla Ekadashi - The day Lord Vishnu awakens from cosmic sleep. End of Chaturmas.
Ekadashi Fasting Rules
- Have light dinner on Dashami night
- Complete fast or fruits only on Ekadashi day
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita
- Break fast (Parana) during Dwadashi tithi
- Avoid rice, wheat, and pulses
